Lock Up Your Daughters...
Although the youngest of the "presumed to retire soon" Supreme Court Justices, Sandra Day O'Connor has just betrayed the country by handing George W. Bush the opportunity to appoint a relligiously-insane, rightwing ideologue to the high Court.
Swingstate Project has already set up to monitor this situation closely. We, the left, must do everything we can to ensure that we end up with a new Justice who rules from the law and the Constitution, not from delusions that the Christian bible has anything at all to do with the governance of this country. We must do everything we can to ensure that we end up with a new Justice who will apply the law fairly to all, who will not let prejudices sway rulings. We must do everything we can to ensure that we end up with a new Justice who will respect the rights of women for self-determination and control of their own bodies.
If we have to, we must block any inappropriate nominees until January 21st, 2009, and do everything we can to make sure the next President is not in the pocket of the religious right. This battle, more than anything, will determine the fate of the country for the next twenty years.
As always, it's a question of moving forward or going backwards. I recommend the film Kinsey as a prime example of what a backwards world was like, and how one crusader can do something about it. In this internet age, we have crusaders everywhere. It is time for us to fight for tolerance, freedom, and free-thinking.
