Sound Familiar

Okay, I had a hint of the BS meter go off when the London bombings happened. Now it's an alarm. This, from the Financial Times of London:
Tony Blair will on Monday reject Conservative demands for a government inquiry into last week's London bomb attacks, insisting such a move would distract from the task of catching the perpetrators.
Well, I call Shenanigans. No, I call bullshit. And isn't that a convenient excuse? We won't look into how we fucked up, because we might not catch the perps.

And we can't do both at the same time, because... why? Hey, if I were the leader of a nation and bombs in my capital city killed dozens and injured hundreds, I'd be the first one screaming for an investigation of what went wrong, how it went wrong, who was responsible and how to not let it happen again. Unless, of couse, I knew it was going to happen, who was going to do it, and how I was going to let it happen.

In that case, I'd just sit in a classroom and read My Pet Goat to school children.

I refer my readers yet again to Terry Gilliam's brilliant Brazil, which takes place in an authoritarian (and daily less unlikely) country, plagued by terrorist attacks, which are the excuse for the government to use ever more draconian arrest and interrogation methods against their citizens. If you watch the movie carefully, one thing becomes very obvious. There are no terrorists. More likely than not, all the explosions happening around town are due to the incompetence of the government's civil servant utility workers. And they give the government a damn good excuse to put the screws to its citizens.

If Tony Blair choses not to investigate the London Bombings, there's only one plausible reason. He's covering his ass. Unless he demands (and complies with) a full and thorough investigation immediately, then Parliament should move to dump his ass, and take whatever recourse is available under British law to remove him from office and hold him liable.

No investigation of the London Bombings? I haven't heard anything as stupid and ridiculous since... um... er... since no investigation of 9/11.

If it sounds familiar, it's because it is. My full sympathy is with the victims of 9/11 and 3/11 and 7/7 -- but with every little bit that leaks out, I tend to think more and more that the perpetrators, the true terrorists, are not the people the governments of the US, Spain and the UK like to claim they are.

"Nothing to see here. Move along..."

Enough. Don't let Tony Blair act like George Bush. Britain, demand a full investigation now, or a Vote of No Confidence tomorrow. Otherwise, I fear that we'll see more of the same, in every European capital of a nation that decides it doesn't want to follow Dubya's Folly in Iraq. Italy has hinted they're going to withdraw troops.

How soon will we be hearing about bombings in Rome? Followed by Berlusconi insisting "no investigation is necessary."

Speaking of investigations, and convenience -- don't let the aftermath of the London Bombings drown out the breaking tomorrow Newsweek story on Karl Rove -- who violated federal law and perhaps committed treason in outing an undercover CIA agent.

'Cause, it's real simple at this point. If you want London and Madrid to happen in New York, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Miami, Cleveland, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Minneapolis, Las Vegas, Seattle, Philadelphia, etc., etc., etc., keep your heads in the sand, let our alleged leaders dodge responsibility, agree when they say we shouldn't investigate the past, just clamp down on the future... forgetting, of course, that when your head is buried in the sand, your ass is ripe for buggery.

Or -- you can express your outrage, get your Senator and Representative on the phone, demand that they do the right thing -- begin impeachment proceedings now against Bush and Cheney, file treason charges for Karl Rove -- get the pack of lying fascist assholes out. Now, now now.

Because they are the real terrorists, and that is the real war on terror -- the American People using their rights (while we have them) to get rid of the jackyls that have hijacked our country. If you're afraid of terrorism, just ask yourself this: how are we protected by leaders who will not investigate terrorist acts against us? Answer, we are not.

And we don't have to put up with it. Not if we chose not to.
